The capital's doctors performed almost 400 operations using microwave ablation. The procedure is aimed at local removal of tumors without damaging healthy tissue. In Kazakhstan, this technique is successfully used to treat thyroid diseases, namely nodular goiter.
Seven years ago, Kamshat Sayyn, a resident of Astana, was diagnosed with thyroid disease. She says that after the birth of her third child, she began to feel compression in the larynx. After the examination, the doctors diagnosed nodular goiter or tumors in the thyroid gland.
Kamshat Sayyn, a resident of Astana:
- Everywhere I went, they said that you need to have surgery, because she is five centimeters tall, she will grow. But I believed that this was my organ, my responsibility, and I wanted there to be a method that did not need to be removed.
Today, Kazakhstan already uses the method of removing tumors without serious surgical intervention. The procedure is called microwave ablation, – says oncoradiologist of the National Scientific Medical Center of the capital Niyaz Malaev. Its advantages are the local destruction of the tumor without damaging healthy tissue.
Niyaz Malaev, Interventional Oncoradiologist of JSC National Scientific Medical Center:
- If it is surgically removed, either part or all of the gland, then the patient switches to strong hormone therapy. With our method, we do not touch the thyroid gland at all, that is, its functions and quality remain, we work only on the node.
In the capital's medical center, the technique has been practiced for six years. 40-year-old Kamshat Sayyn decided on such treatment, having previously passed all the necessary examinations and passed tests.
Polina Zachinalova, correspondent:
- Now we are in the operating room. Doctors have already started manipulations. The microwave ablation procedure itself will last about 30-40 minutes.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. An antenna needle is inserted into the thyroid node, emitting electromagnetic energy. It is connected to a generator and delivers radio waves to the neoplasm.
With positive results, patients are discharged home on the same day. They should be monitored by doctors for six months for prevention purposes. Microwave ablation itself is used not only to remove tumors in the thyroid gland.
Niyaz Malaev, Interventional Oncoradiologist of JSC National Scientific Medical Center:
- It is used very widely because it has a wide range of indications. If we talk about oncology, it is used for malignant neoplasms of the liver, kidneys, lungs and bones, and for benign ones it is the thyroid gland, uterine fibroids and mammary gland. This method can also be used for varicose veins.
If we talk about malignant tumors, now microwave ablation is used only in the treatment of liver cancer. In the future, the capital's doctors plan to use it for the treatment of other oncological diseases.
