The second stage of clinical trials started on July 1, Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek said.
A drug developed in Kazakhstan for the treatment of oncology has successfully passed the first stage of human clinical trials. This was stated by Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek during a briefing following a meeting of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. According to him, 15 cancer patients took part in the study.
"The second stage of testing began on July 1. About 3 thousand people will take part in clinical trials. In total, over 5,000 cancer patients expressed a desire and signed up. The money is provided by the decision of the Higher Scientific and Technical Commission - about 2 billion tenge for the second stage will be received by the research group in August. We will process all the data by the end of the year. We hope that next year we will launch the drug for registration," said Sayasat Nurbek.
According to the government's press service, according to the results of the first stage of clinical trials, where patients with stage IV colon cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of oncology, participated as volunteers, the drug showed effectiveness. Tumor formations decreased by an average of 30%. The second stage involves testing the drug on people with different types of cancer. The tests will be conducted in Astana, Almaty and Pavlodar.
Earlier, during his visit to Nazarbayev University, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov got acquainted with the developments of young scientists, including the research team of the National Laboratory Astana. The creation of an effective cancer drug is one of the most ambitious projects of specialists, the press service of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan says.
