THE NNOC PLANS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS TO 180 PER YEAR.

In the first six months of 2025, almost 1.4 thousand patients with blood diseases were treated at the National Cancer Research Center (NNOC) and 60 bone marrow transplants were performed. There are 45 more adult patients at the stage of preparation for the transplant.

The Center has built a full cycle of care for patients with diseases of the blood system: from diagnosis and determination of prognostic risks according to international standards to high-dose and anti-relapse chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

"Over the 15 years of the Center's operation, all types of bone marrow transplants have been introduced: autologous, allogeneic related, allogeneic unrelated and haploidentical. During this time, about 800 transplants have been performed. In 2025, it is planned to increase the number of beds in the clean room unit from 15 to 21 (the minimum international level), which will allow performing up to 180 operations per year," Head of the Center, Chief freelance hematologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Associate Professor Vadim Kemaykin told reporters during a press tour.

The National Cancer Research Center is the only medical organization in the country that performs bone marrow transplantation in adult patients. The high survival rate of patients with tumor diseases of the blood system is achieved thanks to modern chemotherapy protocols, new drugs and expanded indications for transplantation.
The organizational and methodological department of the Center provides methodological and medical support for hematology patients in the regions. This allows us to introduce modern approaches, monitor treatment and evaluate its effectiveness, as well as ensure continuity between regional medical institutions and NNOC.

The search for a donor for a transplant begins in the patient's family. In the absence of a compatible relative, specialists turn to the National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors, which has been operating on the basis of the Scientific and Production Center of Transfusiology since 2011.

Today, there are 13 thousand potential donors in the database.
19 unrelated transplants were performed using the registry, including four for patients from Russia and Italy. In 2024, a donor from Kazakhstan was activated for the first time for a patient from Italy with a complete match for HLA typing.

Any healthy person between the ages of 18 and 45 and weighing more than 50 kg can become a donor. The procedure of stem cell collection by apheresis is safe, painless and has no negative impact on health.

Today, more than 13,000 patients with hematological diseases are registered in Kazakhstan, and about 2.5 thousand new cases are detected annually.
Bone marrow transplantation remains the most effective method of treating a number of serious blood diseases, and the development of this area in the country is of key importance for saving lives.
